Sinus Headache: SPG Blocks As First Line Treatment

There is a great deal of crossover between sinus pain and headaches, THJ disorders, Migraines, cluster headaches, NDPH and chronic daily headache.

All of these problems are related to the both the Somatosensory fibers of the Trigeminal Nervous System as well as to the Autonomic Sympathetic and Parasympathetic fibers that travel along the trigeminal branches.

The Sphenopalatine Ganglion is the largest parasympathetic ganglion of the head and Sympathetic fibrs from the superior cervical chain pass thru it.

The Sphenopalatine Ganglion is also known as the Nasal Ganglion, Meckel’s Ganglion, the Ptergo[alatine ganglion and Sluders Ganglion. It has over 100 year history of use to treat many types of headaches, first line treatment for cluster headaches and has been used by ENT for 100 years in treating sinus Headaches.

The book “Miracles on Park Avenue” chronicled the practice of NYC ENT, Dr Milton Reder. He utilized SPG Blocks not just for Head and Neck pain but a wide variety of medical conditions.

SPG Blocks are especially useful for almost instant relief of sinus headaches and of a special type of migraine called a contact headache that is set off by contact of the nasal septum to a turbinate.
